What is Traumatic Brain Injury?
Traumatic Brain Injury, also known as TBI, describes an impairment of brain functioning. TBI can result from trama or injury, infection or lack of oxygen. It can occur from motor vehicle accidents, head trauma, objects striking the head, falls, construction site injuries, chemical exposure, near drowning, birth related injuries, or hospital and medical negligence.

And although no amount of money, can replace the damage these types of injuries often cause, large settlements are often imperative because lifelong care is needed.

A patient with mild traumatic brain injury is a person who has had a traumatically induced physiological disruption of brain function, as manifested by at least one of the following:

  • any period of loss of consciousness
  • any loss of memory for events immediately before of after the accident
  • any alteration in mental state at the time of the accident (eg, feeling dazed, disoriented, or confused)
  • focal neurological deficit(s) that may or may not be transient; but where the severity of the injury does not exceed the following:
  • posttraumatic amnesia (PTA) not greater than 24 hours
  • after 30 minutes, an initial Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) of 13-15
  • loss of consciousness of approximately 30 minutes or less.

*Definition of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine Journal Head  Trauma Rehabilitation 1993:8(3)86-7

Traumatic brain injury can result from a sudden hit to the head that causes injury to the skull. It can also occur after an accident or surgery, due to swelling and bleeding into the brain or bleeding around the brain. In addition, traumatic brain injury can result from a "closed head” injury, where there is no obvious sign of damage to the skull, yet symptoms consistent with a brain injury occur.

“Mild” Brain Injuries Are MAJOR BRAIN INJURIES
All too often, people suffering what is termed "mild" brain injury are not properly compensated because their attorney doesn't fully understand the seriousness and far reaching consequences of even a seemingly "insignificant" injury. The fact is, the medical community is just now learning about the long-term effects of mild brain injury. Memory loss, difficulty concentrating and personality changes are just a few of the recurring symptoms that can affect people who have sustained these types of injuries. Sporting Accidents are a major cause of traumatic brain injury. Anytime an individual receives a blow to the head, an evaluation should be performed. An attorney with many years of helping head injured clients will help your case help by hiring appropriate head injury medical specialists and experts.

Depending on the severity of the brain injury, the effects can be devastating. Recovery from traumatic brain injury can be a permanent process of adjustments and accommodations for the injured person and that individual’s family.
